Guide to Laptop Care

Laptop notebook computers are getting more and more popular as time goes on. The idea of replacing desktops with laptops seems to be growing by the day. As powerful, thin, and as useful as laptops are, one thing is often neglected: caring for the laptop. Since laptops are portable electronic devices, they are more susceptible to damage than desktop computers. While manufacturers work to prevent wear and tear, there are still some things that should be done to help ensure your laptop lives a long life.

Try these great tips and tricks:

1. Using harsh cleaners like Windex, ammonia, or alcohol is not the best thing for your LCD screen. Really be cautious when cleaning the display. If using a spray cleaner, avoid spraying the screen directly. Try cleaning the screen with a micro-fiber cloth, like the micro-fiber keyboard screen cleaning pad in the Laptop Accessory Kit from HandStands.

2. Hard drives are sensitive devices. Avoid jarring the computer is while it’s operating. Before moving the laptop, always shut down or hibernate the system.

3. We recommend partitioning larger hard drives to help with efficiency and the organization of your computers documents.

4. Do not overcharge or leave your Li-ion battery fully charged without use. Also, no need to worry about the memory effect of Li-ion batteries—they don’t have this problem.

Exposing the battery to intense heat (over 110° F) should also be avoided for obvious reasons. Batteries can be dangerous, as can be seen from numerous battery recalls in the past from manufacturers like Dell, Toshiba, and Apple.

5. Just like intense heat, leaving your laptop exposed to freezing cold temperatures is also not recommended. If for some reason you find yourself in this situation, let your laptop return to room temperature before trying to turn it on.

6. For the same reason it is recommended to have surge protectors in your home for electronics, you should consider unplugging your modem, network, and power cord when a storm is approaching. Lightning and electronics do not mix well. The last think you want is to have a burned out machine.

All in all, your laptop notebook computer will probably work great for you, but these helpful hints should help you further increase the longevity and efficiency of your computer. At the very least, they will help you better enjoy your computing experience.
